Framing the message

Mary Fallin is running for governor in Oklahoma. She has something to say:

Her words may be about lower taxes and small government, but her jewelry communicates a separate message. It's not just that her necklace is a cross. The pendant is small, and wouldn't be much of a focal point without the help of the jacket neckline, which creates a distinct square frame around the pendant, drawing your eye in to it.

  1. Yep, I agree, she looks very rich. Not bad at all mind you, but definitely not a team player for the working class.

I do love that jacket, however.

  2. My point was actually that she is drawing close attention to her religion, not her wealth. I don't find anything particularly ostentatious about her jewelry in terms of making her look "rich."

  3. Well fine. As I understand it wearing religion jewelry is protected by the EEOC. Add to that that the supporters of "lower taxes and small government" by and large are vocally Christian, I fail to see the validity of your criticism. She is speaking to her peers and supporters quite effectively.

  4. It's not a criticism. It's an observation. She has communicated a message about her religious persuasion and conviction which, as you point out, will resonate positively with her target constituencies.
